Sabine Becker - the cost of recovery
A few months ago, artist Sabine Becker, suffered a stroke. Her recovery has been made more difficult because she is a thalidomide survivor.
Here, she talks to the Taos News, near her home in the US, about her experience.
Sabine Becker didn't fully realize the extent of her May 17 ischemic stroke until her boyfriend took her hand.
"I asked Rick to hold my hand and he said, 'I am,'" Becker said from her Taos apartment July 20. "That was the only time I was really scared."
Becker suffered a stroke two months ago while driving with a friend to the D.H. Lawrence Ranch. She survived without crashing and has made strides recovering from full paralysis on her left side with the support of therapists and her boyfriend, Rick Córdova.
Becker's recovery is no small feat, given that she is also disabled. Becker is a survivor of one of the biggest pharmaceutical disasters in recent history: Thalidomide. Once used to treat pregnant women for morning sickness, Thalidomide was found to cause severe birth defects like Becker's underdeveloped, tiny arms.
