Teratogens register: which products can harm the unborn child, and who says so.

Families ask a simple question after a diagnosis: could something have caused this? No public authority answers it with one list. The World Health Organization keeps none. What exists is scattered across chemical law, medicines regulation and one American state. This register brings those lists together, names the source for every entry, states how strong the evidence is, and says where each substance is banned, restricted, labelled or simply allowed.

01 · How to read it

Three levels of evidence, five sources, one status per jurisdiction.

  • Known: human evidence. In the EU this is category 1A of the harmonised classification; in California it is any developmental toxicant on the Proposition 65 list, which by law contains chemicals "known to the State" to cause reproductive harm; for medicines, a documented human teratogen.
  • Presumed: strong animal evidence, category 1B in the EU, or a medicine contraindicated in pregnancy on animal data.
  • Suspected: limited evidence, category 2 in the EU, or an association shown in epidemiological studies.

The EU harmonised classification is binding law: once a substance carries a hazard statement for the unborn child (H360D, H361d and their variants), every container of it, and of mixtures containing it, must be labelled across the EU and EEA; categories 1A and 1B may not be sold to the general public, cannot be approved as pesticides and are banned from cosmetics. It says nothing about finished articles, food or medicines, which are outside its scope. Proposition 65 is binding in California only and requires a warning before exposure, not a ban; it is enforced through litigation. EMA decisions bind marketing authorisations across the EU: the medicine stays available, under a pregnancy prevention programme. WHO guidance binds no one.
